2010 NJCOS SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS ANNOUNCED

Jay Schnapp, the National Jewish Committee on Scouting Scholarship Chair, has announced the winners of this year's
NJCOS scholarship awards.  The NJCOS awarded $7,000 in need based and merit scholarships.  To qualify, all Scouts were required to earn the Eagle Scout rank and either the Ner Tamid Emblem or the Etz Chaim Emblem



The scholarships were awarded to the individuals below.  For additional information, click on the recipient's name.

Chester M. Vernon Memorial Eagle Scout Scholarship ($1,000 per year for 4 years)

Andrew K. Deutchman
Westfield, NJ
Chester M. Vernon Memorial Eagle Scout Scholarship ($1,000 per year for 4 years)


Andrew earned the rank of Eagle Scout with 50 merit badges.  Since Tiger Cubs, Andrew earned the Maccabee, Aleph, Ner Tamid, and Etz Chaim religious awards.  Troop positions as Assistant Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Quartermaster, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Senior Patrol Leader, and Explorer Post Quartermaster attest to his leadership skill.  Andrew serves his council as a fourth year camp staffer and as a third year camp promoter.  A 2005 National Scout Jamboree veteran, Andrew will serve the 2010 Centennial NSJ as an Assistant Scoutmaster. 

Andrew’s manages time and resources well earning the honor roll, National Honor Society, and National Spanish Honor Society.  Andrew is president and past treasurer of the Spanish Club. He is active in Chess Club, Code Blue Emergency Services Club, Concert Choir, Mixed Chorus, N.J. Math League, Ultimate Frisbee Team, and Woodworking Club.  Andrew was selected from the Mixed Chorus and Concert Choir as a featured performer on N.J. News 12, and at Carnegie Hall.  Andrew has chosen to pursue mechanical and electrical engineering at Steven’s Institute of Technology in August. 

Andrew’s faith, school and Scouting experiences have instilled him with strong commitments toward community service.  As a Bar Mitzvah, Andrew organized drives for the New Jersey Blood Bank.  This USYer and former Kadimanik, collects funds for Mazon, food for his synagogue’s pantry, serves as companion and tutor for the Interfaith Council’s Homeless Shelter, and raises awareness about “Tikun Olam” at conventions.  An accordionist, he entertains convalescent centers, and heroes at N.J. Disabled Veteran’s Home.  Andrew collects non-perishables during “Scouting for Food”, sorts for Union County Food Pantry, assembles sandwiches at Union County Soup Kitchen, and sorts at Union County Recycling Center.  A Police Explorer Academy graduate, Andrew donates communications and security skills during school dances, sports, municipal festivals, and council jamborees.  Andrew intends to serve the public and Scouting while in college.

Nicholas S. Straniere
Staten Island, NJ
Rick Arkans Eagle Scout Scholarship ($1,000)


Nicholas S. Straniere is a senior at the Petrides School, Staten Island, New York. He was the first Eagle Scout in Troop 7 and has earned 78 merit badges to date.  A recipient of the Ner Tamid Award, Nick was able to link his commitment to Scouting and to his synagogue to create an Eagle Project which cleaned and restored the stream and the surrounding grounds at Temple Israel.

An avid camper, this year will mark Nick’s eighth at Camp Aquehonga on the Ten Mile River Scout Reservation.  He has tried to take full advantage of all Scouting has to offer going on a Philmont Trek in 2007 as well as participating in the 2005 Jamboree. This year He will be returning to the 100th Anniversary Jamboree as the Junior Assistant Scout Master with the Staten Island contingent.  He has served as a guest speaker for the GNYC “Good Scout” Luncheon.

At his high school, Nick has been a member of the three times NYC Championship Wrestling Team and the track team.  He plays several musical instruments and is a member of the school’s jazz band; co-musical directed in the SING competition and appeared on stage in productions of “Into the Woods” and “The Sound of Music.” Most recently he performed at a fund-raising concert for Haitian Relief.

Nick has been accepted at Lafayette, Trinity, Franklin & Marshal, Dickinson, Wheaton and Wagner Colleges and will be attending Wheaton this fall.  He believes the experiences he had in Scouting were an important reason for his acceptance to so many top-notched schools.

Ethan M. Berkson
Peoria, AZ
Frank L. Weil Memorial Eagle Scout Scholarships (First Place $1,000)



Ethan is an Eagle Scout with six Eagle Palms.  He has achieved Vigil Honor and is currently the Lodge Chief for Wipala Wiki Lodge 432 Order of the Arrow. He is an active member of Venturing Crew 513 in Glendale, Arizona.    

Ethan has earned the Maccabee, Aleph, Ner Tamid and Etz Chaim Religious Emblems and is only the second scout in the history of the Grand Canyon Council to receive all of their religion’s awards.  Ethan attended the 2005 National Jamboree, and the 2006 and 2009 National Order of the Arrow Conferences (NOAC). At the 2009, NOAC Ethan was awarded 4th place as a member of his Lodge’s Pre-Ordeal Ceremony Team. Also, Ethan has performed at many Scouting events as a member of an Indian Dance team.

He participated in an Order of the Arrow Trail Crew at Philmont Scout Ranch in 2008 and Ethan completed a Wilderness Voyage at the Northern Tier High Adventure Camp at Charles Sumner Canoe Base in 2009.  He has staffed the Section W6W Conclave and worked as staff at Camp Geronimo. 

In addition, Ethan served as a madrichim for his synagogue and is a member of the North American Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY).  At Sunrise Mountain High School in Peoria, Arizona, Ethan has been a member of the Marching Band and the Photography Club.  His Photographs have won first Prize in a City of Peoria, Arizona art contest, Honorable Mention in the Arizona Congressional Art Contest, and First Prize in an Art Contest at Sunrise Mountain High School.  Ethan will graduate in May from Sunrise Mountain High School and plans to attend Glendale Community College in the fall before going on to Arizona State University.

Daniel J. Foster
Fresno, CA
Frank L. Weil Memorial Eagle Scout Scholarships (Second Place $500)




Daniel Foster, an Eagle Scout with 36 merit badges, has earned his bronze, gold, and silver Eagle Scout Palms. He received his Eagle Scout rank on December 11, 2007, at the age of 15. He has served in many positions in his troop including Senior Patrol Leader and Junior Assistant Scoutmaster. He is currently an Assistant Scoutmaster. Aside from being involved in his troop, he has been extremely involved in the Order of the Arrow. He currently serves on both the Brotherhood and Ordeal Ceremony Teams and holds the position of Ceremonies Chairman.

He has participated in and been a staff member of the Sequoia Council’s National Youth Leadership Training.

Outside of scouting, he has been involved in his local temple’s youth group. He has earned his Ner Tamid religious award.

In 2005 he attended the National Boy Scout Jamboree in Fort AP Hill, Virginia. This summer he will be on staff at the 2010 Jamboree working on the Trading Post Staff.
He is graduating magna cum laude as a valedictorian. This fall he will be attending the University of California Los Angeles and will be majoring in Psychobiology. He plans to go onto medical school after graduation.

David W. Friedland
Potomac, MD
Frank L. Weil Memorial Eagle Scout Scholarships (Second Place $500)



David, a proud Junior Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 1948 Rockville, MD, is an Eagle Scout with 28 merit badges, a Bronze Eagle Palm and the Etz Chaim award.  Through scouting, David has developed a zealous passion for Judaism, political activism and an overall appreciation of life!  What has most impacted him was his experience as Senior Patrol Leader in his troop.

A recent graduate of the Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School, David has served as its Student Council President as well as founded its student anti-genocide coalition STAND.  His other undertakings include Past Regional Religion/Education Vice President the  United Synagogue Youth, President of the Tanakh Club, High school newspaper editor and volunteer peer tutor.  His cumulative leadership and positive attitude earned David recently the Robert H. Smith Ohr Chadash Award for innovating leadership, in honor of the late Jewish philanthropist.

David has spent the last three months with his school traveling Israel.  His love for Judaism has taken him hiking and volunteering across the country.  Next year he will matriculate as a freshman at the Albert A. List College of Jewish Studies, a joint program between the Jewish Theological Seminary and Columbia University.  He could not be more excited to live and learn!
