MARSHALL M. SLOANE
Marshall M. Sloane
1988 SILVER BUFFALO AWARD
Bank President, Community Servant, Dedicated Scouter

Marshall M. Sloane's consuming interest over the past two decades has been the Boy Scouts of America.  The seeds of his extensive association with Scouting were planted back in junior high, when he became a Scout in Troop 18, Somerville, Mass.  That early Scouting experience created in him a lifelong commitment to community service.

Your participation in civic affairs, Marshall M. Sloane, is well recognized.  You have served as trustee of the Perkins School for the Blind and as president of the Stoneham Rotary Club.  President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed you to the Small Business Advisory Council.  You are an active supporter of the Cancer Crusade in the Greater Boston area.

In banking you have had a distinguished career as president of Century Bank and Trust Company, which you founded in 1969.  You also serve as president and chairman of the board of Century Bancorp, Inc., a holding company now controlling banking organizations with branch offices in 11 cities.

Since the late 1960s, Scouting has been the prime beneficiary of your unbridled, contagious enthusiasm.  You provided strong leadership as a three-term president of the Greater Boston Council.  Than you were appointed to the Northeast Region executive board.  For service to youth at the council and regional levels you have received the Silver Beaver and the Silver Antelope awards.

At the national level you have become one of Scouting's most dynamic leaders.  Since 1984 you have served as a member of the national Executive Board and chairman of the national Relationships Committee.  Chairman of the National Jewish Committee on Scouting from 1981 to 1984, you were presented the Shofar Award and the Mortimer Schiff Award for outstanding leadership and service.

In 1986, a thousand of Boston's corporate and Scouting representatives saluted your outstanding contributions to the Greater Boston public with presentation of the prestigious Theodore L. Storer Award.  The National Court of Honor deems it a privilege to add to these honors with presentation of the Silver Buffalo to Marshall M. Sloane.
