REVIEW OF THE 2010 NERJCOS CONFERENCE
On March 14, 2010, the Ner Tamid Synagogue served as the backdrop for the Northeast Region Jewish Committee on Scouting's (NERJCoS) 23rd Annual Conference. About 60 volunteer Scouters and Scout Professionals from 20 councils of the Northeast Region were in attendance - just under 30% of the councils in the region. Attendees from Massachusetts to the District of Columbia and from the Jersey Shore to Pittsburgh shared best practices in Jewish Scouting. Materials from the 16 hours of plenary and break-out sessions are available on this website.
This year's conference had new seminars, course offerings and a diverse display area. Trails End Popcorn made sure that all conference participants left with their great popcorn. As they have for the past 15 years, Tzivos Hashem (Chabad-Lubavitch) also provided all conference participants with Shmurah Matzah to add to the meaning of each of our seder celebrations.
We offered special sessions and activities for local Council JCoS Chairs as the plan is now to have the former NJCoS Local Chairs training done on a regional basis. A brand new course track was offered that was specifically designed for this year included History of Jewish Scouting, Storytelling for Jewish Scouting and Promoting Jewish Emblems. We also offered sessions on Cub Scout Leaders on Jewish crafts, themes and holiday ideas (all age appropriate to Cubs), Kinusim, Public Relations, Jewish themed hikes, Scout Shabbat and other JCoS events. A very special thank you to Baltimore Area Council Venture Crew 198 for their session on Venturing for Jewish Scouts.
The conference also received the support of both the NER and NJCoS who served as break-out session leaders, conference participants and speakers during the plenary sessions. In attendance were:
Ethan Draddy, Baltimore Area Council Scout Executive
A.J. Kreimer, National JCoS Chairman
Jay Lenrow, NJCoS Executive Vice Chairman and NER VP For Council Operations
Keith Walton, National Staff Advisor to the NJCoS
Jeff Goldsmith, National JCoS Vice Chairman & NERJCoS Chairman
Paul R. Kramer, National JCoS Vice Chairman for Membership/Marketing
Jay Schnapp, National JCoS Vice Chairman for Scholarships and former NERJCoS Chair
Daniel Chazin, Secretary National JCoS
Rabbi Rachmiel Tobesman, NJCoS Rabbinical Council and Conference Chairman
Alan Grossman, National JCoS member and Program Chairman
C.W. Kreimer, National JCoS and JCoS Chair of Greater Pittsburgh Area Council
Our D'var Torah was given by Rabbi Rachmiel Tobesman who focused on bringing Jewish Scouting to wherever Jewish youth live. The Rabbi's passion for Jewish Scouting brought the conference to Baltimore twice and the increased presence at this year's conference from Baltimore, DC and parts of PA were very much in line with the ideas from the meaningful D'var Torah.
Ethan Draddy, Baltimore Area Council Scout Executive, gave us a welcome and opening remarks. A.J. Kreimer, National JCoS Chairman, addressed the history of Jewish Scotuing and where we are going in the future. Since 2005, we have seen 43 new units sponsored by Jewish entities formed in the Region.
Special recognitions were also a major component of the plenary sessions. Scouters received the Northeast Region JCoS' Bronze, Gold and Silver Chai Awards recognizing their on-going support for Jewish Scouting.
We recognized and thanked Rabbi Rachmiel Tobesman for dedicated service as NERJCoS Conference Chairman. The Rabbi and the BACJCoS did a wonderful job hosting everyone and making people feel welcome. Many opened their homes to participants from out of the area.
Next year's conference will be held in the Central New Jersey area on April 3, 2011 and will be led by Conference Chair Alan Grossman. Please hold the date and plan on joining us for some truly special surprises that are planned to keep this conference vital and of importance to all in work within the world of Jewish Scouting.
